Sony BRAVIA 9 65-inch Mini LED review

Backlight Master Drive and Sony's brightest 4K panel, with the blooming that every zone-dimmed backlight brings.

The verdict: Thousands of mini LEDs controlled by XR Backlight Master Drive, which Sony describe as their brightest ever 4K television, with QLED colour through XR Triluminos Pro, X-Wide Angle for off-axis viewing and X-Anti Reflection for glare. Buy it for a bright room with windows, where brightness and reflection handling decide the picture. Accept blooming: zone dimming produces a halo around bright objects on black that OLED does not, and no number of zones eliminates it entirely.

What it does well

Where it falls short

What owners report

Owner reports on Sony's mini LED flagships focus on brightness and on reflection handling, both of which are the reasons to choose mini LED over OLED. Blooming comes up as expected and is generally described as well controlled rather than absent, which is the honest position for any zone-dimmed backlight.

Our OLED versus mini LED comparison is the decision, and the room decides it: bright rooms favour mini LED, controlled rooms favour OLED. Our best mini LED TV guide covers the category.

Test it on arrival with our TV screen test, paying attention to backlight uniformity on a full-field grey, which is where mini LED panels show their weaknesses. Our smart TV testing guide covers the rest.

Alternatives worth considering

Perfect Blacks
Sony 65 Inch BRAVIA 8 II QD OLED 4K HDR Smart Google TV
~$3,298

The same size and platform with a QD-OLED panel: no blooming, perfect blacks and higher colour volume at brightness. Six hundred dollars more, and it wants a room with controlled light.

Twelve More Inches
LG 77-Inch Class OLED evo M3 Series 4K Smart TV with Zero Connect Box
~$2,800

Seventy seven inches of OLED for a similar price, plus wireless 4K 120Hz connectivity. Bigger and better in a dark room, and less capable in daylight.

If It Is a Desk
ASUS ProArt Display 32-inch 4K HDR Monitor PA32UCG-K, 1,152 zone mini LED
~$3,110

If the television was going to be a computer display, a proper 32-inch reference monitor with hardware calibration is a better use of the money and far better at desk viewing distance.

Common questions

Mini LED or OLED?

Room brightness decides it. In a bright room with windows, mini LED's higher sustained brightness and better reflection handling win clearly. In a controlled or dark room, OLED's perfect blacks and per-pixel control win just as clearly. Both are excellent; the room is the deciding variable.

What is blooming and how bad is it?

Local dimming divides the backlight into zones, and each zone covers many pixels, so a small bright object on a dark background lights its whole zone and produces a halo. More zones and better processing reduce it. It is most visible on subtitles, starfields and end credits, and least visible on ordinary bright content.

Does it suffer from burn-in?

No. Image retention is an OLED characteristic caused by organic pixels ageing at different rates. An LCD panel with a mini LED backlight has no equivalent, which makes it the safer choice for a television used as a computer monitor, with static news tickers, or for a single game with a permanent HUD.

Is X-Wide Angle enough for a wide sofa?

It improves off-axis colour and contrast meaningfully compared with a standard VA panel, and OLED is still better at extreme angles because each pixel emits its own light. For a normal living room sofa, X-Wide Angle covers it. For seats almost side-on to the screen, OLED is the safer bet.

What should I check when it arrives?

Backlight uniformity on a full-field grey, dirty screen effect on panning shots, dead or stuck pixels, and blooming on a subtitle test. Our TV screen test provides the patterns. Do it in the first days, because the return window is the only leverage you have on a panel defect.
