Ghosting Test
Alternating black/white screens to check for image retention (ghosting). Previous images shouldn't be visible.
Contrast & Gray Levels
Grayscale gradient to test contrast ratio and gray level distinction on e-ink.
Dead Pixel Test
Solid white and black screens to spot stuck or dead pixels on the e-ink display.
Uniformity Test
Check for uneven lighting, dark spots, or yellowing across the display.
Text Clarity Test
Various font sizes and styles to test text rendering sharpness.
Front Light Uniformity
For lit e-readers - check for light bleed, dark spots, or uneven illumination.
Understanding E-Ink Displays
E-Ink Characteristics
- Refresh rate: E-ink refreshes slowly - some ghosting is normal
- Contrast: ~15:1 typical (vs 1000:1+ for LCD)
- Gray levels: Usually 16 shades of gray
- No backlight: Front-lit or reflective only
What's Normal vs. Defective
- Normal: Slight ghosting that clears on page turn
- Normal: Gray rather than true black
- Defective: Persistent ghost images
- Defective: Dead pixels, lines, or dark patches
