DJI Mavic 3 Classic review

Forty six minutes of flight behind a Hasselblad-tuned 4/3 sensor, and Remote ID compliance that is not the same as a licence.

The verdict: A Hasselblad-tuned 4/3 CMOS camera, 5.1K video, up to 46 minutes of flight, omnidirectional obstacle sensing with APAS 5.0 and 15km of transmission range. Buy it if image quality is why you fly, because a 4/3 sensor is a large step up from the 1-inch and smaller sensors below it. Understand the rules: DJI state it complies with the FAA Remote ID rule, and Remote ID compliance is a hardware requirement, not a pilot certificate. Flying commercially still requires FAA Part 107.

What it does well

Where it falls short

What owners report

Owner reports on the Mavic 3 Classic are consistently strong on image quality and flight time, and describe the 4/3 sensor as the reason to spend at this level rather than a step below. Complaints are about price and about the app and firmware experience, which is a recurring theme across the category.

Our best drone guide covers the field and our drone testing guide covers what to check before and after the first flight. Our drone test tools are the checks to run on the camera and gimbal.

If you are buying second hand, our used drone testing guide covers battery cycle counts and gimbal condition, which are the two things that decide whether a used drone is a bargain or a repair.

Alternatives worth considering

Different Manufacturer
Autel Robotics EVO 2 Pro V3 with 1-inch CMOS sensor and 6K HDR video
~$2,099

A 1-inch sensor with 6K HDR recording, from a manufacturer outside DJI's ecosystem. Smaller sensor and higher resolution, and worth considering if manufacturer diversity matters to you.

Ground-Based Instead
Sony Alpha a7S III Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera Body, Black
~$3,998

If image quality in low light is the goal, a full-frame camera does it far better than any drone, needs no certificate and no airspace authorisation. It cannot give you an aerial angle, which is the entire point of a drone.

Same Money, No Rules
Canon EOS R6 Mark III Body, Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera
~$2,799

Thirty two point five megapixels with 8.5 stops of stabilisation for similar money. Listed as a reality check: a drone is a licensed activity with airspace restrictions, and a camera is not.

Common questions

Does Remote ID compliance mean I can fly anywhere?

No. Remote ID is a requirement for the aircraft to broadcast its identity and position, and a compliant drone satisfies that requirement. It is entirely separate from whether you are permitted to fly: airspace restrictions apply, and commercial flight requires an FAA Part 107 remote pilot certificate. Check the current rules for your situation.

Do I need a licence to fly a drone?

In the United States, recreational flight has its own set of requirements including a knowledge test, and any commercial use, including content you monetise or use to market something, requires an FAA Part 107 remote pilot certificate. The rules change; check the FAA's current guidance rather than relying on a review.

Why does a 4/3 sensor matter?

Sensor area determines how much light each pixel gathers, which decides dynamic range and low-light performance. A 4/3 sensor is several times the area of a 1-inch sensor and many times that of the small sensors in cheap drones. Aerial work happens at sunrise and sunset, which is exactly when sensor size shows.

What is the difference between the Classic and the standard Mavic 3?

The Classic carries the main Hasselblad 4/3 camera and omits the tele camera of the full Mavic 3. If you need the zoom for compression or for keeping distance from a subject, the Classic is the wrong model. Otherwise it is the same aircraft and the same primary camera for less money.

Is the 46 minute flight time realistic?

It is a maximum under favourable conditions, with hovering quoted lower at 40 minutes. Wind, temperature and aggressive flying all reduce it, and you should always land with a reserve rather than flying to the warning. Real-world sessions typically come in meaningfully under the headline figure.
