Do not buy it for stills: 12 megapixels is a deliberate choice that buys low-light performance, and it means very little cropping room and modest print sizes.

Why does the a7S III only have 12 megapixels?

Because it is a deliberate trade. Fewer, larger pixels on a full-frame sensor collect more light each, which is where the extraordinary high-ISO performance comes from. It also means 4K video can be read out from the full sensor without line skipping. The cost is stills resolution, and Sony makes other bodies for that.

Is 12 megapixels enough for photographs?

For web use and modest prints, yes. For anything requiring cropping, large prints or client delivery at high resolution, no. If you need one camera for both stills and video, a hybrid body with 24 to 33 megapixels is the right choice and this is not it.

What memory cards does it need?

The highest bitrate modes require CFexpress Type A cards, which are expensive and less common than Type B. UHS-II SD cards work for lower bitrate modes. Budget for media, because the cards for a camera like this are a genuine cost rather than an afterthought.

Does it overheat?

Sony state an operating range up to 104F, and sustained high-bitrate recording in heat is where every mirrorless body is stressed. Owner reports describe it as far better than the generation before it. Plan for it on hot shoots: shade, airflow and reasonable expectations of continuous run time.

Should I buy it now or wait?

Check Sony's current lineup and pricing for a comparable role before ordering. This is a 2020-generation flagship, and paying close to launch price for a five-year-old body only makes sense if the alternatives do not match it. In low-light video specifically, it has aged unusually well.
