Buy it if you want workstation performance in a machine that stays silent and runs all day on battery. Understand two things: this is the 2023 M3 generation with newer chips available, and nothing inside it can ever be upgraded, so the memory and storage you buy are permanent.

Is the M3 Max still worth buying?

It depends on the price gap to the current generation. The M3 Max remains a very fast chip and 64GB of unified memory is 64GB whatever generation it is on. Check the current lineup's pricing for a comparable memory and storage configuration before ordering, because a two-generation-old flagship near current pricing is poor value.

Can I upgrade the memory or storage later?

No. Memory is part of the chip package and storage is soldered to the logic board. Whatever you buy is what the machine has for its entire life. That makes the configuration decision permanent, and it is the strongest argument for buying more memory than you currently need.

How much unified memory do I need?

For general professional work, 32GB or 48GB is comfortable. Sixty four gigabytes matters for very large 3D scenes, high-resolution video work, large datasets and running local machine learning models, where the GPU addressing the whole pool is the advantage over a discrete card with fixed VRAM.

Is it really silent?

Under most professional workloads, yes, and under a sustained maximum load the fans do run. Compared with an x86 workstation laptop under the same load, the difference is not subtle. This is one of the genuine practical advantages of Apple silicon.

What should I test when it arrives?

The display, primarily. Mini LED panels can show uniformity variation and blooming, and dead or stuck pixels do occur. Run a full-screen colour and uniformity test in the first days, check the speakers and the ports, and do it all inside the return window because nothing here is repairable at home.
